This arrondissement of Paris is part of the Marais, one of the oldest and most sought after neighborhoods of the French capital. In recent years the Marais has undergone an amazing transformation and now boasts a dizzying selection of boutiques, restaurants and cafes. However, in spite of its now fashionable reputation the rue Chapon and the surrounding area still retain the charm of a true Parisian quartier. It was the Marais that became home to many of the French nobility who had constructed in town mansions (hotels particuliers) in order to remain close to the royal court at the Louvre. These structures, of which there remain many, have now been transformed into museums, apartment buildings and what the French refer to as “espaces” for art exhibitions, displays and a host of other functions. Primary sites in the Marais include the Museum of Arts and Trades, the Museum of Art and History of Judaism, the National Picasso Museum, the Cognacq-Jay Museum, the Museum of the History of France and the Carnavalet Museum.
